5 Stars A review for people who are not clean freaks
First off, its important as a matter of perspective to note that I am NOT a clean freak, not by a long shot. I never even considered the possibility before that one vacuum could be better than another; if it had suction - good enough. It wasn’t until my last vacuum drove me absolutely insane with the constant changing of belts (1 to 3 belt changes per use, approx. 700 sq ft done per use with my old dirt devil) that i decided it was time for a major upgrade. It was the lifetime belt with its 6 year warranty on this hoover that prompted me to buy it, because I NEVER WANT TO CHANGE ANOTHER FRIGGIN’ BELT AGAIN. From what I can gather, it sounds like Hoover never expects you to have to change this belt, which is pretty awesome. I never dreamed that there would be other reasons to love this vacuum. Boy was I wrong.
This vacuum does more than pick up crumbs from the floor. It actually makes your carpet feel cleaner. I think my carpet got a shade or two brighter than I’ve ever seen it before. I have some fairly heavy duty kitty litter piles that get embedded in my carpet. Not only does it pick them right up, but it does it without flinging the cat litter all over the room in the process!
One of the major deterrents that always kept me from wanting to vacuum before was that my allergies (which normally aren’t that bad at all) would go bonkers - itchy eyes, burning sinuses, not pleasant. When I use my new hoover - there are NO unpleasant side effects. It’s incredible. Some vacuums claim they are picking up 99.9% of dust, but they don’t specify where that dust goes after they pick it up (i.e. “sure we pick up ALL the dust, but then we just fling it back up into the air so you can breathe it all in and feel sick”). This vacuum REALLY picks it up, no flinging of dust here, not that my sinuses can detect anyway. Feeling less sick when cleaning - priceless.
False claims abound about vacuums having an automatic shutoff when something gets caught in the brushroll; this one was honest about that too - have already tested it (by accident) and it was really on the ball - a super-quick shutoff to keep stuff from getting damaged - very cool. It is also quieter than most vacuums so no terrified kitties here. I could actually hold a conversation while I vacuumed, so that’s pretty damn quiet for a vacuum.
Now about the little shoulderstrap additional vacuum that comes with all the attachments - I have yet to find a way to wear it that doesn’t blow hot air on your butt which is somewhat unpleasant especially on a hot day. So slight downside there. But overall I find it highly satisfying - you really feel like you’re accomplishing something with this little thing. It gives you so much maneuverability and you don’t have to worry about keeping an eye on the stupid floorvac while it tries to wrap its brushroll around everything in the house everytime your back is turned. Its so much less of a hassle for me that I find myself vacuuming things I never would have even dreamed of vacuuming before. I was never much of a duster, but I find myself hunting down more things to conquer with my vacuum backpack. The dusting brush works much better when you angle it flat against the surface you’re trying to dust - sometimes you have to push it down a bit to make sure its flat enough to get suction (this is probably quite normal - i don’t really have a basis for vacuum dusting comparison).
Anyway, just thought it important to note that even if you don’t think a vacuum upgrade could improve your life - you might not have realized all the things a really great vacuum can do for you. Hopefully I have given all the cleaning slackers an easier to relate to perspective about this vacuum. Its definitely worth paying a bit more for a vacuum when you get results like this.
5 Stars At last, a terrific vac design!!
After many years of hating vacuum cleaners, tripping over cords, drugging heavy bulky vacs up and down stairs and along hallways, there’s finally a vacuum cleaner that solves most of these problems! This two-part vac is an ingenious design. A lightweight vac for floors and carpets, and another small shoulder unit for hard to reach places. No more dragging the upright around to reach blinds, window ledges, furniture crevices or other hard to reach places that I mostly ignored. This machine is vacuum cleaner bliss, if that’s possible!
A lot of market research must have gone into the design of this vacuum set. There are lots of convenience features such as the telescoping wand and the way parts fit together. Very well designed, attractive and well made machines. Not junky like some recent Hoover machines. And the price was great. ($208 at Amazon checkout, August 2010) I have large wool area rugs, vinyl and laminate flooring. This vac works great on all of them.
The design and quality of this two vacuum set is far superior to the older Hoover WindTunnel I had before. This older unit still has good suction, but I hated the heavy bulkiness, manual floor adjustment and poorly designed tool caddy. In that unit the tool cover was always flopping open, tools falling out, and finally the on-off switch quit working. That’s when I read the reviews for this dual set and decided to buy it. I hope Hoover keeps this vac set in production! After 40 years, I finally found a vac I like. Note: You can get velcro pads for shoulder straps (sold for seat belts) at auto supply stores.
4 Stars It’s a keeper!
We checked out Consumer Reports’ listings & went to look at the top 4: ‘best buy’ & ‘recommended’ models. This ‘recommended’ Hoover model made the cut. The idea of a separate unit for floors, walls, etc., was very appealing. The main unit is very lightweight but has excellent suction. It is easily maneuverable, although I do miss the rotating front wheels on the Dirt Devil which made it super easy to steer. (Considering how heavy that sucker was (no pun intended!), they were a great feature.) And I do think it may be the quietest vacuum I’ve ever heard! (This model was even rated higher than the tested Kirby which is nice considering the investment you can make in one of those.) After reading reviews here, I’m very glad we bought this model! [I just wish I'd remembered I saved one to the shopping cart; we could've saved quite a bit!

1 Star Terrible vac & SUCKY HOOVER customer “service”
My first vac arrived with a malfunction - the change bag light was on & the light would not turn off despite removing and re-installing the bag. In addition, the vac would simply turn off repeatedly when I tried to vacuum. So I contacted Hoover’s ‘Platinum’ customer ’service’ & explained the issue. The Hoover rep (Rebecca) stated there had been a problem with the circuit board in this model & offered a replacement unit. Fine. So the 2nd unit arrives & it has the SAME PROBLEM…right out of the box! Again, I contact Hoover’s customer ’service’ & the rep says I can 1) Request a refund 2) She can send a ‘tested’ unit out(vac #3!!!!), but I have to send back at least one of the 2 units I have before they’ll process the 3rd vac. The rep was definitely trying to persuade me to take the 3rd unit & not the refund. I said I’d pretty much had it with the flawed units/waiting/dealing with this ongoing problem & was inclined to take the refund. She said she’d send labels out for both unit returns. Fine. So she sends ONE label to me & I send her ONE unit. I called Hoover customer ’service’(Brittany)to request the return label for the refund of the remaining unit & I’m told THEY WON’T ISSUE A REFUND FOR THE REMAINING MALFUNCTIONING UNIT!!!! I was shocked! According to ‘their’ notes, I had said I was cool with just getting a 3rd unit & not the refund. NOT TRUE!!!! I stated I never agreed to a 3rd unit & wanted a refund. The Hoover rep said they don’t DO refunds. I asked for a manager (Lisa)and was directed to a voice mail graveyard where my refund request message sits & rots. I think this is sick, considering the cost of the unit, the time wasted, & the level of irritation. HOOVER Customer ’service’ SUCKS & not in a good way!!!! These units ARRIVED BROKEN!!!! The Hoover rep ADMITTED there’s a circuit board problem!!!! I would expect more from Hoover. Shame! Shame! I’ll be making it a point to tell EVERYONE about my terrible experience with Hoover & their poor quality control!!!!
4 Stars happy with purchase
For the same price about 7 years ago, I bought a sears progressive and never found that it did a good job.
I’m thrilled with the hoover platinum. It seems to be well made, does a great job on floors and carpets, not too loud and I love the canister as well for ceilings, baseboards and corners, though it isn’t incredibly comfortable - you have to wear a t-shirt -i tried with a tank and the strap rubbed against my skin. I like that the upright doesn’t use tools attached and that the canister is separate. I hope it holds up well. I’m really happy with my purchse. I waited too long to get a new one. glad to retire the sears vaccuum.

4 Stars Very good hardwood floor stick vac
Very good for hardwood floors. It does get warm though, so I’d believe the reviews that say it overheats and shuts off when using it on carpeted rooms, so don’t buy it for that purpose. I have a 1 bedroom with den condo that’s all hardwood with just one small area rug, and it does a great job of getting dust, cat hair and cat litter up off the hardwood and the area rug.
Only cons are the build quality is a bit cheap. The wheels could roll a lot smoother, and the pivoting could be smoother. The Ergorapido cordless stick vac I tried before buying this was much better on that front–but I hated the 15 minute battery life and having to leave it on the charger all the time. From some research, this seems to be the best corded stick vac option as they’re aren’t a lot out there anymore as companies have gone with cordless models.
4 Stars Hot item!
This is a pretty nice little vacuum with not that bad of a price. The only drawback that I have seen is that it puts out a lot of heat. I only use it in small amounts of time, so it hasn’t broken down or shorted out on me. I use it on a tile floor and on the small bit of carpet that we have, and nothing escapes its wrath. I would not be surprised that it overheats though, considering the hot air it pushes out from the vent. Overall as long as you are looking for something such as a “spot” vacuum, I think that it does very well. Remember though to clean out the brush though if you have the hair problem that I do(my hair falls out), it makes everything much easier if it works well. I would definitely recommend this to my friends.
5 Stars Hoover Electric Broom
This is the second Hoover electric broom that I have purchased (one for Florida and one for up north) They do a great job on floors and carpets. Lots of suction, long cord, and it will stand upright without falling over.
3 Stars Hoover Flair
I bought this stick vacuum to replace one that was over 20 yrs old and specifically wanted a swivel head. The Flair vacuum works best on bare floors; has good suction and is easy to maneuver. The swivel head does make it relatively easy to get around “most” things, however it is a little too wide to get behind my toilets. The dirt filter cup is small, fills quickly and is very messy to clean. You end up with dirt on your hands.
5 Stars great little vacuum
This was the third little Hoover that I’ve purchaseed– one for my office; one for my home; and now one for my second home. As far as I can tell, it is the only little vacuum that has a power nozzle that you can turn on and off. Most of these little vacuums work with suction only– which is fine for hard floors, but doesn’t really clean carpets. I bought another brand that had a power nozzle- with the rotating brush, but you couldn’t turn it off, so it beat up hard floors and orientals. The little Hoover Flair has a conventiently located switch that lets you use the power mode for carpets and plain suction for hard floors. With the power nozzle on, it cleans carpets as well as a big heavy vacuum. With the nozzle off, it has the perfect amount of suction for hard floors. And it’s light and easy to use like all of the vacuums in this category.
I’m sold!

2 Stars A little disapointing
I have two cats and was looking for a better way to clean up the cat little that spills around the edge of the box.
I had high expectations after reading all the rave reviews, to pick up all the cat litter my cats track out of their litter box. It had powerful suction at first, though it did let a lot of dust through the filters and tended to drop some of the debris as soon as I shut it off. Both filters, there’s an accordion pleated paper filter and a plastic filter with tiny holes, became clogged within a week. To clean them, you have to wash them in water. The cat litter dust turned to cement as soon as I did that. I was never able to get the filters completely clean again despite a lot of effort. After that, we stopped using it for cat litter, it’s intended purpose, but it continued to become more and more clogged over time, despite repeatedly cleaning the filters. Finally it’s suction power is nil. We are throwing it away. I suppose that if you don’t use it on clumping cat litter or other materials that may turn to clay or cement upon washing the filters, it might be an okay vacuum if you don’t mind a bit of dust blow through.
5 Stars Very Powerful
We’ve had several of these porta vacs in the past and not been very impressed with any of them. My wife does most of the vacuuming but I have used this one a couple of times. It has amazing power. It’s heavier and larger than the others we’ve had, but worth the hassle of working with the extra heft.
The little brushes etc that come with it should have a better storage compartment in the base unit. I think we may have already misplaced them! I think they were an afterthougt for Black and Decker. Not essential equipment in any case.
5 Stars Plenty Power
We would NOT be without this model! Keep one in home in the Hotub & Cat room and one on motorcoach.
As Consumer reports says….”may be cheaper hand vacs but the Black & Decker 18 volt is the strongest”.
Folds nicely, stores on stand……. Can’t find ANY better….we have tried.
5 Stars Great product
I normally avoid B&D, but the reviews were good on this, so I took a chance. It is really a great hand vac. Well designed with a lot of thought. Good suction, versatile pick up which swivels in several directions, you can see how full it is and it is easy to empty. It also folds easily and fits into a very nice compact hanger. Can’t think of a single negative.
5 Stars Best “broken” dust buster I’ve ever had
I like vacuuming; I find it cathartic. Which is why, after the 23 hour requisite charging period, I was very excited to use my new vacuum for the first time. I took it off the cradle and clicked it on, looking forward to removing some Cheerios my daughter kindly crushed into the carpet. And nothing. No sound, buzz, whir, light. Nothing. It was DOA. I charged it for another 2 days and still nothing. I was crestfallen.
So I called Black and Decker’s help desk and spoke to an incredibly friendly and helpful rep. They agreed to send out a new vac free of charge since the nearest repair center was 50 miles away. A few days later, I decided to crack open the broken vacuum and see what would happen. I touched - something - and voila! It lived! I don’t know what I did or what was wrong, but it’s been working great ever since (about 1 month so far). It has a monster of a battery - I cleaned my mini van with it - and it sucks up things that you wouldn’t think would fit, like grapes and Teddy Grahams. The thin, swivel head is great for hard to reach places and awkward angles. It is a very well-designed appliance.
I called B&D back and asked them to cancel the replacement. They said not to worry about it; consider it a apology for the inconvenience. Wow.

5 Stars Great Vacuum
Small , but very effective . Very well made . A pleasure to use .
5 Stars nice vac for small cleanups
I needed a vac to sweep up the cat litter trail my 3 cats leave. This works very well for that. Has great suction and the carpet setting is great. It not only picks up the cat litter but it also picks up cat hair. I use it daily for quick cleanups
5 Stars Excellent lightweight vacuum
We love this lightweight vacuum. it is great for quick cleanups and can be used on hardwood or carpet with just the flick of a switch. we have two dogs and it picks up pet hair incredibly well. highly recommended!
5 Stars Easy cleaning
Very easy to use and store away.
I empty the container and rinse the dust bag each time I use it.
Works great on my wood and ceramic floors.
5 Stars Great product, great price!
I received this vacuum yesterday and after trying it out around the first floor of my ~1100 ft2 house, I am VERY happy to have purchased it! I can’t judge its durability since I’ve only used it once, but it did a great job on my hardwood floors, tile, and low-pile area rugs picking up cat hair, cat litter, dust, and kitchen crumbs. The vacuum is very lightweight and pivots so nicely that it easily maneuvers into small spaces, under furniture, and around edges and various items, where it continued to do a great job sucking everything up. Noise was not too loud, either. This will not replace a regular upright vacuum since there are no attachments for vacuuming things like baseboard trim etc, and it may not be strong enough for carpets to use exclusively on those. BUT, for more frequent cleaning and quick touchups, it’s perfect - gets the job done with no need to drag out the heavy, bulky upright vacuum and lug it up and down stairs! Previously, I had to bend over and vacuum my hardwood and tile floors by hand with the upright’s attachment nozzle to get them clean, but that was a time-consuming and back-breaking task that I can’t continue with a baby on the way! This vacuum will be perfect for avoiding that. I also tried it on about 5 of my carpeted stairs, which are regular pile carpet, and it seemed to work well there too (although those had been vacuumed more recently anyway so it was hard to tell). Plus, the pivoting head made it easy to vacuum the carpet on the stair risers - big bonus! The Flair is light enough for me to easily handle at 8 months pregnant and it can be hung on the back of a door for convenient storage in small spaces. Emptying the dirt cup and cleaning the filter was easy too, which you’re supposed to do after each use since the cup (and vacuum) is small. Highly recommend this item…

1 Star Overheats after 2 minutes. No sucking power!
I have to admit, I’m usually a really high product rater - but this little vacuum is ridiculously useless. We received it for Christmas, and have used it less than 5 times. Each time we use it, it overheats and cuts out after less than two minutes. It does not suck, and is a useless waste of space. We have wooden floors, and on either the carpet or floor setting it cuts out. We have a labrador, and it does not pick up hair or dirt - it just moves stuff around. I don’t know if we got a dud machine or what, but it’s going straight to the trash for us and we’re sticking with a broom from now on.
1 Star Worthless purchase!
I have had this since Jan. 15 (6 weeks) and have used it on bare floors about 10 times. It just shut off, never to run again. The power beaters work, but it won’t turn on. Can’t send it back because it costs more to do that and have it returned than it was worth. No wonder it was $49.00 - you get what you pay for. I would have expected Hoover to have made a better vacuum. Back to Sears for one that will hold up. I’m disgusted!
