Carpet Vacuuming Missteps To Avoid

December 21, 2009 by Aiden Mundt · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Vacuum Cleaner

I’ll bet you’re like I was and put off the chore of vacuuming as long as you can? Or least for another day. Because few things rival vacuuming for mind numbing boredom. And skipping it doesn’t hurt anything, right?

Wrong. Avoidance of this task isn’t good for your family’s health or the health of your carpet. That’s because the abrasive sand and grit can wear away at the carpet fibers eventually leaving them looking less than great. While the dust and mite build up can leave you sneezing and feeling less than great too.

Plus there’s a right and wrong way to vacuum. Unfortunately, most get it wrong. In part because no one taught them any different. Let’s see if we can’t change that.

Anyway as the benefits become clear, regular vacuuming takes on a greater sense of urgency. To help clarify those benefits, here are nine easy tips to maximize the time you spend with your hand on the vacuum.

Divide your carpet into high and all other traffic areas. Vacuuming the high traffic areas like halls and stairs a couple times a week is best. While weekly is sufficient for the rest.

Most dirt that comes into your house comes in on the bottom of your shoes. Use walk mats to reduce this. Even better get everyone to leave their shoes at the door.

Help your vacuum do a good job by keeping it armed with fresh bag and filters. You see as the dirt accumulates air can’t pass thru them as easily. You know this a loss of suction power. So don’t try to push the bag or filter longer than you should. Filters are best replaced every three months. And put in a fresh bag when the current one is three quarters full.

Then here’s the biggest mistake most make. They’re in too big of a hurry to get the job over with that they don’t allow the machine to do it’s job. You want to run the head of the vacuum over the same area at least three or four times. Twice that for high traffic areas that are the dumping ground for dirt.

Make sure your vacuum is set at the correct height: If you set the cleaner too low you risk damage to the carpet, belts and roller brushes of vacuum cleaner. Too high and you will not extract embedded dirt or pet hair.

You need to work the vac against the pile to suck up all the dirt. Again the idea is to run the vacuum over the same section of carpet rather than moving the head to a new part with each pass.

Inspect your vac often to keep it clean and maintained. Inspect the belts and replace as needed. Clear the brushes of strings, threads and the like. Make sure the head is operating as it should.

Avoid running over the cord with the vacuum. Find a central location, plug it in and keep it behind you as much as you can.

Despite the mounted light, do this job when you can see where you’re vacuuming.

Few things can rival an expanse of carpet that has just been vacuumed. The color is uninterrupted by strings, hair or dust. Then too if you’re using a bagless vacuum you can see how much stuff you’ve vacuumed out of the rug. Not to mention the good feeling you get knowing your home is fresh and clean.

As a vacuum enthusiast Aiden Mundt has written on how best to care for wall-to-wall carpets. Some find Dirt Devil vacuum cleaners work best. Others favor the Miele Capricorn. But what does Aiden think? Find out at leading vacuum review site AskTheVacuumGuy.com.
